The American Community School is an international school in Amman, the capital of Jordan. It is an independent, coeducational day school which offers an American educational program from preschool (3 years old) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1955.

Contents

Curriculum

The curriculum is that of U.S. schools. Instruction is in English. Arabic, Spanish, and French are taught as foreign languages. There is no religious instruction. Advanced Placement courses are offered in some subjects. The School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Faculty

In the 2004-2005 school year, there were 39 full-time and 6 part-time faculty members, including 27 U.S. citizens, 8 host-country nationals, and 10 third-country nationals.

Enrollment

At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year, enrollment was 387 (PK-grade 5: 188; grades 6-8: 71; and grades 9-12: 128). Of the total, 162 were U.S. citizens, 65 were host-country nationals, and 160 were third-country nationals. Of the U.S. enrollment, 66 were dependents of U.S. government direct-hire or contract employees, 15 of U.S. business and foundation employees, and 81 of other private U.S. citizens. In the 2007-2008 school year there is 479 students. In total there was about 92 more students in a course of 3 years.

Facilities

The School is housed in a modern building which includes 33 classrooms, 3 modern science laboratories, 2 Macintosh computer laboratories, a library, a sports and fine arts center, 2 playing fields, 2 tennis courts, and facilities for art and music education. The school's expansion plan will continue into the summer of 2011, with the addition of a new plot of land that will be ready for use during the 2011-2012 school year.

Finances

In the 2004-2005 school year, about 87% of the School's income derived from regular day school tuition and registration fees. Annual tuition rates are as follows: 3-yr. and PK: $2,714; Kdg.: $5,935; grades 1-5: $8,130; grades 6-8: $9,335; and grades 9-12: $10,820. The School also charges a one-time capital fund assessment of $3,000. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
